Less is better in many cases. Or less is more.

What should you do less? In pubic speaking there are many meanings you can give to it: less messages (only one main message), less words, less text, less decoration (unless it has a meaning). If we restrict ourselves to slides I say:

  • less concepts (one per slide)
  • less text (it’s almost always too much)
  • less of everything else, stick to what is really needed.

The last point, albeit funny, is the crucial one. Doing less doesn’t mean to strip way elements important to convey our message, rather get rid of the superfluous that adds little or nothing to our communication. This may not be easy, you need to be focused and rigorous. Ask yourself: “Do I really need this? Is it here because I thought the more will make me more credible? Have I put it in just because I care showing it?”

The whole point is your audience attention, a limited resource. More you put in front of them, more their focus is diluted. The risk is they do not grasp what is the real idea you want them to bring home.
